Q & A with Jen

Can you tell me more about the book cover?

The photo on the cover was taken by me at one of our homeless Welcome Wagons.  The “blessing” was for a woman suffering with brain cancer.  She had finally come indoors, but her apartment was dirty and completely empty. Her cupboards were bare.  After giving her the cross in the picture, she prominently displayed it in the entrance to the apartment.  As I was leaving I quickly snapped this picture of the cross, not realizing the cigarette butt was right next to it.  When we returned to the car, I noticed it almost immediately and was struck by the contrast of the cross and cigarette.

As I reflect on our work with the homeless, it seems fitting that there would be a cross next to a cigarette.

As Oscar Wilde said, “Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.”  That’s what this picture and this entire book says to me.
